Memorial Day weekend- check out these 5 great ways to celebrate around Asheville
Memorial Day weekend is often viewed as a holiday to just grab some beers and hang out with friends for the weekend but Pack Square in downtown Asheville makes sure we remember in our hearts that Memorial Day is about remembering those whom have given their lives performing a duty for each and every American citizen. The Memorial Day concert and ceremony is being held on May 29th at 2:30pm. North Carolina Fort Bragg 82nd Airborne Band and the Reuter Center Singers will be performing. Shortly after a Recognition of Service presentation will be held for not only our armed forces but also our community first responders who gave their life in the service of others.
But….a weekend with beer and friends is still a great way to celebrate! So let’s take a look at these fun ways to spend Memorial Day Weekend in the Asheville area! This is Asheville after all so you know we have something for everybody.
Lake Lure Arts Festival- This semi-annual community event draws visitors from across the southeast as more than 70 artists display custom works in pottery, sculpture, painting, stained glass, photography, wood carving, and furniture. The festival will feature onsite displays, children’s area, live music and fine local food. And best of all, it’s FREE to attend! Check it out at 107 Arcade Street, Lake Lure, NC from May 26th to May 28th.
Mountain Sports Festival- This fun and outgoing take on a festival is for people of all ages and extremely fun to partake in! It is truly a celebration of the Blue Ridge Mountain lifestyle and all the things our outdoor enthusiasts hold dear. Come on by to Carrier Park in Asheville where you can learn about, compete and participate in a wide variety of sports such as paddle-boarding, climbing, disc golf, skate boarding and so much more! There’s a great line-up of musicians complete with delicious food vendors and tasty libations.
Garden Jubilee Festival- Head on over to downtown Hendersonville to fill the phyto in your heart. The streets close to vehicles and open to the people to celebrate everything green! They have it all from landscaping, gardening, workshops, architecture, exhibits, grills and even lawn equipment. It’s like Coachella but for gardeners!
White Squirrel Festival- The White Squirrel Festival is nutty, family fun over the Memorial Day Weekend. This fun street festival in Downtown Brevard honors some special wildlife critters, the white squirrels. These are not albinos, but siblings to the gray Eastern tree squirrel. And this particular species made its way to Brevard in 1949 as a result of a carnival wreck in central Florida. Free to all.
