This wine-poached plum recipe is perfect for a light dessert or breakfast starter. It is also great on the side for a lunch salad. Make sure you use a nice wine for this recipe as the plums will only enhance the depth of flavor (they cannot improve a bad wine). You can use any type of plum, they should not be overly ripe or they will fall apart.

Prep Time: 10 Minutes
Cook Time: 20 Minutes
Total Time: 30 Minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups red wine
  • 3/4 sugar
  • 1/8 tsp powdered ginger
  • 3 slices Orange peel 4 “ long and ¼” wide
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 6-9 Plums
  • 1 small container vanilla yogurt
  • Orange zest for serving
  • Mint for garnish

Instructions:

  1. Simmer wine, adding sugar, ginger, and salt until sugar is dissolved in a 10" to 14" flat-bottomed pan (large enough to fit plums).

  2. While the sugar is dissolving, cut the plums in half and discard the pit.

  3. Once the sugar is dissolved, place the plums in the wine mixture. Simmer for 10 minutes, or until plums are tender. Turn if the mixture is not covering the plums.

  4. Once the plums are tender, remove them from the wine bath, and turn up the heat, reducing the wine mixture to a syrupy consistency. Remove the sauce from the heat, and add vanilla.

  5. Plate the plums on a small dish, pour some syrup on top and add a teaspoon of yogurt, and a mint sprig (if you have it). Grate orange zest over the entire plate.
