Wine Poached Plums

This dish is great for a light dessert or breakfast starter. It is also great on the side for a lunch salad. Make sure you use a nice wine for this recipe as the plums will only enhance the depth of flavor (they cannot improve a bad wine).

Cook Time: 20 Minutes
Total Time: 30 Minutes


  • 2 cups red wine
  • 3/4 sugar
  • 1/8 tsp powdered ginger
  • 3 slices Orange peel 4 “ long and ¼” wide
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 6-9 Plums
  • 1 small container vanilla yogurt
  • Orange zest for serving
  • Mint for garnish


  1. Simmer tighter wine, sugar, ginger, salt – until surgar is dissolved – in 10 to 14” flat bottom pan

  2. Cut Plums in half and remove pit

  3. Place Plums in wine mixture, and cook on low heat for 10 minutes each side – or until plums are tender

  4. Remove plums from liquid and reduce to syrup consistency, add vanilla and remove from heat

  5. Place plum on plate or dessert dish and place 1 tsp yogurt, in center

  6. Spoon syrup over top and Grate orange zest over yogurt/syrup

  7. Garnish with mint
