I just love this time of year because there is so much to celebrate and the weather here in the Blue Ridge Mountains is usually perfect for the festivities. We get most of our rain out of the way in mid spring and have mostly sunny days with cool nights throughout the rest of the spring and summer.

The time-honored way to enjoy to Fourth of July is to grab some chairs or a blanket and head to one of the many viewing areas where you can view the stunning and patriotic pyrotechnics.

We have a great celebration in downtown Asheville for this, stocked with food trucks, beer and wine vendors, plenty of green to find a cozy sit spot and of course live music! You can also head to Lake Louisa Park in Weaverville, Lake Lure, Lake Julian in South Asheville and downtown Hendersonville too.

We do, however, have lesser known festivals and activities that I will share with you. Because sometimes it’s nice to get out and do something a bit different and have a new experience. Here are three unique ways to celebrate our nation’s independence this year!

Red, White & Bluegrass Festival– This festival kick starts on July 4th and lasts through the 7th and is located in Morganton, NC which is only an easy 45 minute drive from Asheville. This event brings in thousands and thousands of bluegrass fans to converge on the Catawba Meadows Park. The line-up is star studded with the best bluegrass bands in the industry and yes, on the 4th they light up the night sky with a stunning fireworks display! This is one of North Carolinas largest music events held! Check it out!

Freedom Train with Smoky Mountain Railroad– If you’re looking for a relaxing evening with no rushing or traffic worries, hop on board the Freedom Train to enjoy American classics like a BBQ picnic-style dinner, a slice of apple pie, spectacular sunset views on the Fontana Trestle, and a visit from Uncle Sam himself! Follow this link for class descriptions and pricing! https://www.gsmr.com/index.php?q=events/freedom-train#classes

Biltmore House celebration dinner at Antler Hill Barn–  Head on over to the Biltmore House for a delicious buffet style feast, Biltmore wines being lavishly poured, select beers, and old fashioned fun and games for all ages to enjoy! The evening will end with a very dramatic fireworks show on the estate grounds. This event is only held on the fourth of July from 6pm to 9pm.
